Winter Driving Checklist

It’s the worst, treacherous time of the year . . . to drive. Living in the northeast is beautiful in the wintertime, but when it snows, boy does it snow. The snow is always an increased risk of driving-related auto accidents to occur. Don’t worry though, Troy Insurance has got you covered with a winter driving checklist so you know how to be prepared this snowy season.

1. Check your tires.

You should consider replacing your tires if they are worn out. Snow tires are highly suggested for those who live in the northeast.

2. Keep your gas tank at least half full.

Condensation forms on the inside wall of your empty gas tank which turns into ice as the weather gets colder. This can end up cracking your tank. Once that ice melts, it can make its way into your gas supply, which leads to costly repairs.

3. Clear all snow off the exterior of your car.

If snow blows off of your car roof, it could land on the windshield of other cars around you. The drivers around you can lose sight of the road if it gets in their way.

4. Don’t leave up your windshield wipers before a storm.

Strong winds, heavy rain, hail and ice can break the wipers and even crack your windshield. Leave the wipers down and use your defrosters before driving.

5. Make an emergency kit and have a plan.

Some suggested items can be: a fully-charged portable charger, flashlight, batteries, blanket, bottled water, snacks, etc. Memorize or write down emergency contacts. It’s good to know how to change a flat tire and jump start a battery.

NOTE: If you’re stranded, you can run the heat for approx. 10 minutes out of every hour, but make sure your exhaust is clear of snow.

6. Charge your cell phone.

If you know that snow is going to approach that day, you should try to have full battery on your phone in case you need to call for an Uber, friend/family member, or towing. It’s always good to tell someone where you are headed in case something goes wrong.

7. Stay alert, but go slow and break right.

Look out for emergency vehicles and plows, but do not get too close or else damage can be caused. Never use cruise control in the snow; it reduces your ability to slow down and react. However, it is important to just drive with caution on bridges and overpasses (they tend to freeze first). Don’t feel pressured to drive faster if the drivers behind you are honking. Always apply the accelerator and the brakes as slow as possible. Give extra space between your car and the one in front of you. Also, try your best to not come to a complete stop on a hill; you may roll backwards and land on ice.

Let’s try to reduce the number of driving-related auto accidents this winter by following the tips above!
